Remember to practise singing 《流浪到淡水》 for our presentation!

The team of 30 has arrived back in Singapore with plenty of learning experience and many interesting stories to share with our parents and friends.

Looking at the photos above from Day 1 and Day 5, do you think we have grown more mature and wise?

As what Ms Phua has told us, our learnings from this trip is not just restricted to this trip, it should stay with us for life. We will be the 26 shining stars from now on. : )

Our last day at Beitou Elementary School

After an eventful 3-day exchange at Beitou Elementary School, we have come to our last day at this school. Group C, comprises Nicia, Hannah, Zhi Feng, Shao Yee, Jun Jie, Brandon, Cheng Shuan and Sitong, will bring you our observations about the pupils and the feelings about our stay here.

We will first share some of our observations:

  • The pupils in Beitou can keep any hairstyle they want and they do not need to join any CCA to keep long hair.
  • The pupils can choose what they want to wear to school while Singapore pupils have to wear uniform to school. They can even wear costume jewellery to school.
  • They can wear the type of shoes they like.
  • They use number tag but not name tag.
  • They can bring handphone to school.
Ms Phua and our teachers have quizzed us on the reasons behind what we observed and we have also asked our Beitou's friends and teachers for some of the answers. We understood that the school culture in Taiwan is different from Singapore and schools in Taiwan have different school rules from our schools too. It is indeed an eye-opening learning experience for us!

We felt very happy to be in Beitou Elementary School as our buddies were very kind to us. They introduced to us the different parts of their school, chatted with us and even gave us farewell gifts. What we find most memorable and significant about our stay in Beitou Elementary School is the learning about their lifestyle and culture.

Our 2nd day at Beitou Elementary School

Today, Group B comprising Nevin, Andre, Gordon, Jesse, Kester, Mark, William and Wei He will bring you our update from the Beitou classroom.

In our natural science class, we observe that when the Taiwanese pupils see insects, they will catch them and give to the Science teacher. The teacher will then go on to teach the class about that particular insect. Perhaps by giving the insects to the teacher, it will be able to live longer as well?

We also had IT lesson in the computer laboratory. We created some powerpoint slides and we used traditional chinese characters in the process. On one hand, we think that using traditional chinese characters is very fun but on the other, we also think that they are difficult to write. We wonder why they learn chinese using traditional chinese characters while we use simplified chinese characters. We will find out the answer tomorrow.

Some of our highlights today include:

Making our own clay figurines

Visiting 中正纪念堂

Enjoying our sumptuous buffet dinner, yummy!

Our First Day at Beitou Elementary School

Hi, everyone! Today, Group A will bring you our daily report from Taipei. Our little bloggers today comprise Alicia, Cherilyn, Yu Bing, Gabrielle, Dara, Grace, Jia Hui, Aretha, Athena and Eugina.

Today, we went to a school called 北投国小. Firstly, we went to the school's library and the pupils and teachers gave us a presentation about the school. A pupil told us about the history of the library and the school. The pupil told us that the name '北投' was from a local story where some people saw 'white smoke' coming from a mountain. They believed that witches resided in the forests on the mountain. In actual fact, the white smoke came from the hot spring on the mountain. If you want to know more about the story behind '北投', click here.

At the library, we were divided into different groups and the pupil librarians told us about the different sections in the library. Group A was split into 2 groups for the classroom experience. One group learnt about the properties of Air and the other group learnt Chinese in their class. What we find interesting is that their chinese words are written vertically from top to down and from right to left, in contrast to what we see in Singapore.

Taipei Day 1

Today marks the start of our exciting Taipei Discovery. We had a thorough briefing by Ms Phua and Mrs Low. We finally said goodbye to our parents (and our beds at home) at about 11.30am. Mrs Low gave all of us a card to cheer ourselves up and it is indeed time for us to learn to become more independent.

After a four-hour flight, we arrived at Taipei CKS International Airport. After checking in and taking our dinner, we had a briefing. We had mixed feelings, both nervous and excited, about the next day!

We will use "My Island Home" as our performance item in the event we are invited to put up an item. Please continue to practise the song item at home until you are very familiar with the lyrics. Have fun!

If you are keen to see the chinese MTV for this song《幸福的图形》, you can click here.

MY ISLAND HOME

This is my home
She's everything to me
Grace and beauty
In all that you see

My island home
Wherever I may be
I never will forget her
Nor will she forget me

Chorus ^
And I will sing
A song of home
A land of peace
Where dreams are born everyday
My home
Wherever I may be
I believe
You will always be a part of me ^

My island home
Home of my family
This is my future
Where I want to be
(This is my future
This is my home)

Repeat Chorus x 2

My home
Wherever I may be
I believe
You will always be a part of me
A part of me
